Kavanagh's
Pub, "The Wren's Nest", Main Street, Portlaoise
This family run establishment had been trading on Main Street since
its establishment in 1869. In that time the building had seen its share
of change and wear and tear as a busy commercial premises.
The Kavanagh family was anxious to re-develop the premises in its existing
location and G&L Property Investments Ltd.. was appointed as main contractors
to carry out the works.
Work commenced in early 2000 and the old premises were effectively razed
to the ground with the exception of part of the external walls, which
defined the footprint of the building.
The project had its share of complexity, given the site constraints and
the importance of maintaining the structural integrity of the adjoining
structures in this terrace. The premises was completely re-built to a
new design, incorporating all modern conveniences whilst maintaining a
more conservative façade with traditional shop-front.
Since December 2000, Kavanagh's "The Wren's Nest" has had a new lease
of life. Not only was it re-opened after being completely demolished and
then re-built over seven months; but P.J. Kavanagh jnr took over the job
of running the place from his father, continuing a fourth generation family
tradition.
